Abstract:Before the Republic of China, the shape of the Wenzhou city walls built against the mountain remainedbasically unchanged. Although the notion of demolishing the Wenzhou walls had already been put forward by localsduring the early days of the Republic of China, the actual dismantling was not carried out until the construction ofZhongshan Park began. In 1934, the government selected city gates located on traffic arteries, widened the gates anddemolished the Yuecheng (a semi circular enclosure between outer and inner city gates). From 1938 to 1939, underthe impact of the war, Wenzhou led to the extensive demolition of the city walls, resulting in the destruction of mostof them. Since then, the remained city walls had been dismantled intermittently for the purpose of paving roads, constructing air raid trenches, and building docks. Factors such as municipal construction, transportation, conceptiondefense, and war were the main reasons that affected the retention or demolition of Wenzhou city walls during theRepublic of China.
